Job: Postdoctoral Researcher – Developmental Biology

Applications are invited from suitably qualified, highly motivated candidates for a fixed-term 3 year contract Postdoctoral Researcher position in Developmental Biology based at the Grealy/Byrnes laboratory at National University of Ireland, Galway. The successful candidate will work on a programme employing knockdown and rescue approaches in zebrafish to model the congenital heart disorder arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a leading cause of sudden death in young athletes.  The molecular mechanisms underpinning the disorder will be investigated

The post is funded by a Health Research Award to Dr Maura Grealy and Dr Lucy Byrnes. The work will involve collaboration with Prof Peter Dockery, Anatomy, School of Medicine and Prof Didier Stainier, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California, San Francisco.

Essential Qualifications: Applicants must have completed a PhD in molecular, cellular or developmental biology, with a good publication record and have a keen interest in pursuing research in heart development. The successful applicant will have expertise in molecular techniques and be experienced in both independent and collaborative research.  Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Desirable Qualifications: The ideal candidates will have significant experience in one or more of the following: zebrafish embryo microinjection, western blotting, confocal microscopy, q RTPCR, immunohistochemistry; peer-reviewed publications in areas of relevance to the project are also desirable.

Start date: October 2011

Starting salary:  €41,181 per annum
